Teaching Hard Histories

Our Statement on teaching Hard Histories

We unequivocally support the efforts of educators, organizers, parents, students, and others who are committed to teaching critical, inclusive, and true histories of the United States and those who have built it

Teach Africatown believes that hard histories are essential to teaching students to consider multiple perspectives, think critically, foster empathy, and to understand freedom and justice. We also believe teaching hard histories require pedagogies of care that acknowledge the emotional impact such narratives have on teachers and students alike.

We remain committed to supporting educators by providing them with the materials and resources to sustain their teaching of hard histories. We understand that different educators face different challenges and barriers to teaching these histories. Thus, we are committed to meeting educators where they are and working together to understand, develop, and implement strategies and solutions.
